After exhausting all other alternatives, a group of scientists create an artificial life form to help heal the earth's ecosystems by drawing down atmospheric carbon dioxide and cleaning up industrial pollutants. The humanlike appearance, intelligence, and ability to learn quickly make this new species both wondrous and frightening. When the artificial beings become violent toward their creators, they are quickly quarantined on a remote island (Pandora), never to contact the outside world again. The island's location is kept secret to prevent anyone from trying to find them. However, the scientists eventually develop the means to send humans back in time by transferring their minds into another artificial body (Avatar). The scientists send their data across the world (to project Pandora into real life) for security reasons. Going back in time, Avatar finds its way to Earth's Na'vi people living on Pandora. Upon learning of his abilities, an Na'vi named Eywa (Neytiri) pulls the humans out of the past and helps them to return to their own time. Aboard a "Heart" spaceship, Avatar learns that Na'vi is dying and seeks to save her people by bringing Eywa back. As he is unable to make an opening in the hull to enter Pandora, he decides to retire on Earth with his human wife Grace (Zoe Saldana), leaving behind his friend Jake (Sam Worthington). Avatar dies, but is brought back to life by Jake, who convinces the Na'vi that he is not immortal. Jake and Grace return to Pandora in their "Heart" spaceship in order to retrieve Avatar's body for burial. Eywa helps them in the process, and they manage to recover the body. However, they are pursued by a Na'vi pursuer named Iloa (Winona Ryder) who wants Avatar's body badly. She is also pursued by Neytiri after she learns of her betrayal of Eywa. The trio barely escape with their lives when Grace accidentally activates the ship's self-destruct mechanism while escaping from Iloa, destroying it in the process. eccc085e13
